Huh.

The day after I mentioned how much better I'm sleeping after Biden won the presidential election, someone unfriended me.
Coincidence? Probably not. But if someone is going to unfriend me because of that democracy-wrecker who has been occupying the White House for nearly four years now, I'm 100% fine with it ( Read more... )

Where all did you post the message? Because I can't imagine there are many subscribers to LJ who would mind, going by what I'm seeing. But, yeah, I've heard from other people the reaction they got elsewhere when they posted their political leanings.

I do wonder if the two sides can ever get along. My brother-in-law and my niece's husband are both Trumpites. When I'm around them I try to steer clear of political discussion. Luckily, they're the only ones in my immediate family who are. But if I can't talk to them about it, how in the world could I with anyone else?

On Dreamwidth, cross-posted here. She unfriended me from LJ. I've certainly got a lot of reaction to my political posts on FB, got unfriended there very early by one of our mutual acquaintances, got into some lengthy debates with people I've known for ages (who have since stopped arguing with me because I just wouldn't stop my side of the debate - though AFAIK, they didn't unfriend me). Somehow I found it surprising in this space, even though I shouldn't have.
Pre-Trump, I used to be able to talk to Republicans, to have real, genuine conversations about our differing opinions and why we hold them. But now? The divide seems impossible to bridge. "45" threw gasoline on every fire that divides US society. And that scares me, for the implications it holds for our future and the future of the entire world. How do we come back? I have confidence in Biden's ability to bridge gaps, but they've never been wider in my lifetime.

Yeah, I think I know which mutual acquaintances you're talking about. An English acquaintance of ours was taken aback by that acquaintance's politics. While I was still on FB I created a friends list, putting on only those people I really wanted to hear from. The rest still thought we were "friends," but I didn't have to see their crazy posts.

I'm not sure how we're going to handle this. I'm on a neighborhood group, and there's a couple of real Trumpansies on it. No one can bring up even being careful without one of them flying off the handle. I just don't understand how they can believe something without any proof, yet not believe in something when there is some.

Don't worry about it. Probably not someone you want to hang with anyhow.

Thanks; I'm not. I only knew her through the internet and through a mutual fandom, not personally.
