Dear Mary

I submitted this to the Dear Mary campaign that is asking Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter, Mary, to take a stand against the new marriage amendment. The campaign assumes ownership and editing rights over the statements, so my unedited text is below. Yes, this is what I believe.

Open Letter to Mary Cheney

Dear Mary,

Unlike a lot of the people writing these postcards, I don't believe you are quite as free to do what you wish as it might seem. Your father is remembered by many survivors of government mind-control as a high-ranking abuser/programmer. I sincerely doubt you got away without being tampered with, any more than George Bush Jr did. Your dad and his cronies also have a lot of pressures to bring to bear, not excluding execution by various means. So, unlike a lot of people, I don't see this as a simple request we are making of you.

However, I still make the request. Mind-control is not nearly as powerful as it seems from the inside. It depends on a whole social context of control and abuse. A small step, a small act can be the key to unlocking the whole system -- both within your psyche and within the culture.

You probably don't know all of it. (Who does?) You definitely know some of it. You know enough to know that what your father and his cronies are doing to this country and to Iraq is wrong. You know enough to know that this amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman is wrong. Even for people who believe that religious marriage is only for a man and a woman, it is wrong to legally impose this belief on civil marriage. You know that.

So... you have this one place to stand up to your father and his corruption. You can say out loud that it is wrong. It's a good place to start, however risky.

Blessings to you,
Cat.

p.s. to editors: I would prefer to withdraw my statement in its entirety than to have the clause about Iraq deleted from it. Thank you.
