I drove to San Francisco today to pick up a brochure for Jon. hehe. Okay, I also went to see the last day of the Interfaith Sacred Space exhibit (not to mention take a short walk on a beach that is ugly & crowded by spoiled Marin standards, but does have a lovely view of the Golden Gate Bridge and sweet little sailboats set against a backdrop of ( Read more... )

Oh cool! I'm glad you got to talk to Don! He is my colleague... the other national interfaith rep for Covenant of the Goddess... and a dear friend. He has done an astounding amount of work getting this competition off the ground. My favorite was #108 which didn't win anything but was one of those practical, sort of spirally indoor-outdoor designs complete with rooms for kitchens and childcare. I'm sure the architects were unimpressed but if *I* was building an interfaith center that is the one I'd build.

I like that number. It's one of mine. I have a thing about certain 3-digit numbers.

Was that one of the first ones when you walked in? I remember two big spiral designs, both of which I liked. I did have trouble understanding the diagrams, though, so I don't remember which one had those rooms. The first one struck me more forcefully, though.

I liked Don. Very down to earth. I wish I'd known he was COG. I wasn't quite sure what was safe to talk about. If I'd known that, I'd have figured, "pretty much anything." :-)

I simply cannot believe that popsicle sticks and Playdoh have gotten that expensive! ;-P

Thanks for your thoughts. I figured the conflict among the judges must be a typical one. I think I have an awe of "architecture" that probably has little to do with what most architects think of as architecture. To me it means someone has really considered the relation between the physical structure of space and people's desired experience in that space. I've occasionally had interesting conversations with architects about this, so I've kind of taken that idea as the essence of architecture, even though it obviously is not the idea currently selling houses and shopping malls. I suspect that it's something that you do think about, though, which is why I thought of you as soon as I first heard of this exhibit. Looking forward to seeing your degree project post.

Thanks for being so excited about this, Jon. You really are adorable. I was considering posting a grumpy post, but now I'll wait til tomorrow. (Ha, you were warned.)
