In a round about way, maybe.

The pulse requirement was an actual line the board president said at the dinner, the one step back comes from a joke a friend told me. It's about an Army seargent who is too blunt with his men, so he tries to deliver some harsh news in his most sensitive manner.

"Everyone who's mother didn't just die, take one step back - NOT YOU JOHNSON!"

I guess most jokes are Groucho derivatives.
