I don't know how widespread this is in middle schools, but I just learned today that the schools in my district don't have Social Studies classes anymore. Geography, world history, etc. -- that stuff isn't on the standardized tests so they just stopped having the class. Other subjects will try and shoehorn social studies subjects into their lesson ( Read more... )

I know kids here often complain about history saying that it's useless, but I'd say knowing about your past is probably good for preventing, say, WWlll.
Also, those were exactly the few subjects I didn't hate in high school!

I feel so sorry for the girl, I babble too when I'm under stress and with audience looking at me. It's not nearly this bad, but enough to feel like an idiot.

Not including geography and history in the classes is just plain insane :| it's like not having math. Who makes these decisions?!

I remember my 5th grade science teacher realizing we couldn't put names on all the states and taking time out of every lesson to quiz us.

Oh man, this goes beyond poor geography skills. >_>

I don't know how they were able to justify geography and world history as being so useless.
