Can It Be You and Me?

Part 3

At the club

“Hey, what’s up man?” Hyuksoo greeted Jiyong who sat quietly on the couch. He had been looking at him for awhile. Jiyong looked so weak and sad that he could not bear looking at him anymore. He would have made him happy if only Jiyong gave him a chance. Just one chance.

“Hey,” Jiyong greeted back. He gave him a forced smile.

“I’ve heard that Youngbae is dating someone,” said Hyuksoo sitting next to his friend.

“Yes,” said Jiyong, “Where is noona? Are you alone tonight?” He did not want to talk about Youngbae and his girlfriend here.

“Today I’m single,” said Hyuksoo. His funny tone made Jiyong smile.

“I’ll tell noona you said that!” said Jiyong threateningly.

Hyuksoo looked at Jiyong’s eyes and said nothing. It was long enough so that Jiyong tilted his head questioningly.

“I like it better when you are smiling,” said Hyuksoo. Looking more serious, he asked, “Jiyong, are you okay?”

Jiyong gave Hyuksoo another sincere smile and said, “Yes, I’m.”

“Are you okay that Youngbae having a girlfriend?” Hyuksoo asked him again.

“Yes,” said Jiyong looking away, “I may be lonely a little and jealous a little but I will be fine.”

“How do you really feel for him?” said Hyuksoo out of nowhere.

“He is my best friend,” said Jiyong.

“I’m your best friend too but you didn’t act like this when I started dating,” said Hyuksoo. “You can ignore the other’s feeling for you but you can’t ignore your feeling,” he said.

“My feeling alone doesn’t mean anything,” said Jiyong. Looking back at Hyuksoo, he met the same old warm and caring eyes. His eyes never changed.

“Jiyong, if,” said Hyuksoo taking Jiyong’s hands in his.

“Don’t,” Jiyong cut him off. “Don’t leave anyone or anything for me. I’m not worth it. You are my best friend and I want you to be happy,” said Jiyong.

“I will be happy,” said Hyuksoo never taking his eyes away from the man beside him.

“You won’t,” said Jiyong, “You will be happy only with someone who truly loves you.”

“And you can’t?” asked Hyuksoo.

“I’m sorry,” said Jiyong. He gave him the most sincere smile and hugged him tightly.

Hyuksoo hugged Jiyong back as tightly. Tears falling from his eyes, he did not want to let him go. But it was out of his reach. He was too far away..

….

“How was your date, hyung?” asked Daesung seeing Youngbae walking his way. “It went wrong or anything? Why do you look upset?” he added after seeing him closely.

“It was great,” said Youngbae but his tune saying otherwise.

“Then what’s wrong?” asked Daesung.

“Where is Jiyong?” asked Youngbae. He went to Jiyong’s room but no one was there. So he called Big Seunghyun asking if Jiyong was with him. Knowing Big Seunghyun was still at the studio made it worse.

“He is hanging out with the Nuthang, hyungs,” said Daesung, “He won’t come back before midnight. Do you have something urgent?”

“No,” said Youngbae.

“Then why angry?” asked Daesung. Sometimes, Youngbae was too complicated to understand.

Youngbae did not say anything. He got up and walked to his bedroom angrily. He did not know why he was angry. There was one more question he could not answer. The questions he had been ignored.

….

Jiyong had been successfully avoiding the dinner with the newly couple for a month. Thanks to his schedule that he had to work on the special collaboration with W-inds.

In Japan, it was the first time a guy tried to openly flirt with Jiyong. He sent him flowers, took him to dinner and more. Although he could not say no, they never went out alone. Jiyong always had his manager by his side.

Jiyong told the guy frankly that he was into girls and he could be only friends. The guy did not listen. He said he had his right to flirt with any single guy and girl and his flirting would not hurt anyone if it was not successful.

That guy was Keita.

Jiyong could breathe comfortably in his room. He flied back from Japan last night. He was going to YG in the afternoon. Hopefully, Youngbae did not bring up the dinner date so soon.

….

Youngbae was in a very good mood today. He was going to take Jiyong to the newly open restaurant. He would love it. They had not had lunch or dinner together for a month. They had never been apart for this long. Jiyong did not even call him when he was in Japan. And sometime before that, he did not know when their usual talk had stopped.

He missed him

Youngbae told himself that if he did not talk to the other members for this long, he would miss them too. He was positive, wasn’t he?

Youngbae shook his confusing thought away. He smiled brightly when he saw his best friend walking out of the elevator.

“Hey,” greeted Youngbae cheerfully pulling him in for a big bear hug.

“Hey,” Jiyong greeted back. He really missed this familiar warmth.

“How was Japan? How was your flight?” said Youngbae walking with Jiyong into the studio.

“It was great. I can’t wait to show you the song we’ve made,” said Jiyong, “How are you?”

“I miss you,” said Youngbae, “really.”

“I miss you, too,” said Jiyong. If this was all he could have, he was happy.

“Hana asked me about you too,” said Youngbae, “What about dinner this evening?”

Here they went again with the dinner. Jiyong knew that he could not avoid it anymore so he said, “What about tomorrow evening instead? I think I’m having a jet lack.”

“Sorry,” said Youngbae looking worried, “You look really pale! Do you want me to take you home? Do you want a nap?”

“I think only a nap will do,” said Jiyong, lying down on the sofa at the back of the room. He closed his eyes. The flight wasn’t long but he had had too many sleepless nights.

“I’ll be right back,” said Youngbae and left.

Minutes later, Youngbae came back with a wet towel and a blanket. He put the blanket over Jiyong and gently rubbed his face with the towel.

“Thanks,” said Jiyong quietly.

“You don’t have to,” said Youngbae, “I’ll be here until you sleep.”

“Baby?” said Hana answering her phone.

“Hana,” said Youngbae, “I can’t meet you this evening. Jiyong doesn’t feel well.”

“How is he?” asked Hana.

“Sleeping,” said Youngbae. “I think he may be sick from traveling. We can meet tomorrow. I’ll call you later,” he said.

“Okay baby,” said Hana, “Talk to you later.”

After the call, Hana sighed. She was really jealous of their relationship although they were just friends. Even when the best friend was not around, Youngbae could bring him up almost every topic they talked about. They were really close to each other so their relationship was special. Too special.

….

The next day

There was a bunch of roses delivered to Jiyong. Youngbae saw it first and took it to the studio where Jiyong was working. He thought it was sent from a fan or some girls like usual. But he was wrong. It was from an unexpected person.

Youngbae looked obviously moody when he gave the flowers to Jiyong. “Since when have you been seeing him?” he asked.

“Who is seeing who?” asked Jiyong. He did not have any clue about what Youngbae was talking. Then he looked at the card and realized he was misunderstood. “I’m not seeing anyone,” he said.

“Then why did he sent you this?” asked Youngbae. He himself was wondering why he was angry. It was not the first time Jiyong got flowers.

“I don’t know,” said Jiyong. “He may miss me already,” he added jokingly.

“You just said you are not with him!” said Youngbae loudly.

“I’m joking!” said Jiyong, “Why are you angry?”

“I’m not!” said Youngbae bringing his voice down.

“You are!” said Jiyong.

“I’m not,” said Youngbae. He could not admit he was angry because Jiyong would ask why and he had no reason for it. Changing the subject, he asked, “I’m going to pick you up at 8 this evening.”

“Sorry, Youngbae,” said Jiyong, “Teddy wants me here. We have an urgent song to finish.”

Youngbae looked at Jiyong undoubtedly furious. He walked to the door deciding to leave. He did not want to say anything he might regret or start a fight with his best friend. The flowers and now the cancellation of their dinner, all Jiyong said sounded just like some excuses to him.

“If you don’t believe me, go ask Teddy,” said Jiyong. He secretly thanked Teddy to make him busy this evening because he had no more excuses to say no to dinner with the couple.

“Fine!” said Youngbae and he left.

Jiyong never saw he was this angry so he said his apology again. “I’m sorry.”

….

At the dinner

“Baby, what’wrong?” asked Hana, “You are so quiet today.”

“Nothing,” said Youngbae.

“Is it because Jiyong could not come?” asked Hana. Youngbae was not interested in anything they were doing. If he was going to treat her like this, he’d better stay with his best friend.

“No,” said Youngbae sighing, “I’m sorry.” He looked at her. He should not take his bad mood on her.

“You can tell me anything. I’m a good listener,” said Hana.

“Thanks baby,” said Youngbae giving her a peck on the lips. “Do you want to watch movie after this?” he asked.

“Of course,” said Hana, “but you will make a headline if someone finds out. Let’s rent some good movies and watch it at your place or mine.”

Youngbae smiled. They had some nights together and they were great. At least he could take Jiyong off of his mind…for a while…
