Cate yawned and stumbled about the living room. Half-filled boxes stuffed with clothes, books, and other knick-knacks were strewn all over the floor, blocking Cate's path. Jet lag was still overpowering her, and she couldn't really tell where she was going.
After tripping over a box filled with sweaters, she finally made her way across the obstacle course that was her living room and into the kitchen. She grabbed a glass from the cabinet and glanced at the clock: 3:00.
"Stupid jet lag causing unnatural sleeping patterns," Cate muttered while filling the glass from the tap. She gulped down half the water, then walked back to the living room.
Cate sat down at the computer and swished the mouse around until the swirling colors showed her desktop. She double-clicked the little yellow figure at the bottom of the screen and attempted to log on to AIM. Unfortunately, the computer didn't feel like cooperating that day. There was a click as the Internet connection disconnected itself.
"Oh, c'mon!" Cate furiously double-clicked the server icon and reconnected, then reopened the AIM window. A message from Viggo popped up on the screen, but just as Cate began to type the cursor, and the rest of the computer, froze.
"Not again!" She hit the side of the monitor with an open hand, then sighed as she rebooted the computer. Just before she had a chance to reconnect for the second time, the computer shut itself down. Cate stared, open mouthed, in disbelief.
"Fine, you hate me, I hate you, I'll just leave you alone," Cate climbed out of the chair and threw her hands up in the air, "But that's okay, I don't need to talk to my friends today!" The only response was a whirring. Cate turned. The computer had restarted itself, and Cate swore that the monitor was turned in her direction.
"It's glaring at me, it's judging me."
Cate backed away, slowly.
Viggo tells me I'm just being paranoid, but I really think my computer is plotting my demise. There's something under my bed in case it tries to kill me in my sleep, and I have a lighter in my back pocket, just in case I'm not near the bedroom. So if my computer does kill me, someone better avenge my death! Or I'll come back to haunt you!
