I use a pen tablet, and there are times when somehow, unbeknownst to me, I've done something that ended up with a whole slew of items to be highlighted, not just the one item i meant to highlight. by hitting the up or down arrow, i'm closer to having selected what i meant to select. now, i'm not sure why it doesn't just give me the ONE i started with but the feature is useable for me just fine. the only reason it would be a problem is if EVERYTHING else is different and so things aren't so automatic.
but i don't think, at least on my computer, that this is different from all the other lists of items on my computer.

It's simple, its that way cause. . . LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!!! FLYING ELEPHANTS.

FYI, mail.app also loses settings and dumps folders intermitantly (sorta like thunderbird). I would advise against its use. That being said it WILL behave properly when you use shift-mouse clicks
