Your overweight cat still has not lost weight even after you have followed the vet's directions. What do you do? What would your next step be ( Read more... )

Did the vet suggest Science Diet?

Disclaimer: I am a raw feeder. I would feed Catkins :)

The vet suggested that we reduce the amount of food that we feed her. We give her purina indoor organic dry food. We used to just fill her bowl up and refill it when it got empty so we had no idea how much we were feeding her (we do that for our other two cats but they're normal weight). The vet told us that what we were giving her was ok but to measure 1.5 cups of food and space that out throughout the day.

She doesn't recognize anything other than dry food *as* food (she's a bit 'special') but if you have any suggestions about a better quality dry food that'll help her lose weight I'd be happy to hear it!

You might try posting in rawdogs (which is also feline- and ferret-friendly!). There are quite a few folks in there with the same problem. Even if you're not sold on raw, it might be worth asking how they got their cats to eat stuff other than kibble.

Otherwise, at the very least I'd switch to a brand like Orijen. My toy breed dog gains weight very easily from carbs (probably due to the whole being-a-carnivore thing ;) ). When I was feeding dry food like Nutro, I could only give her a tiny bit or she'd get overweight. And I felt like by underfeeding her she was not getting sufficient nutrition. That's a big part of why I switched to raw...she only eats 4-5oz food/day, so I'd rather it come from meat, bones, organs, and small amounts of veggies and supplements.

I'll give it a go. I'd be fine feeding her raw if I knew she would eat it. Perhaps if there was a way to make raw food into dry pellets she'd eat it. I'll ask at rawdogs and see what they think. Thanks for the suggestions!

Laser pointer! And less entertainingly, controlled feeding.

See another vet for a second opinion.

Lots of playtime? My older cats aren't interested in toys, but if I walk around the yard trailing a piece of string they will run after me and leap on it.
