I was talking about this with someone yesterday, and I think a big part of the problem is that there are some bad pet owners out there but a WHOLE LOT of lazy pet owners, i.e. people who think just doing the basics with food, shelter, and affection should be enough. Give these people a Golden Retriever or a good-natured small terrier mutt and they'll probably be fine. Give them a Pit Bull and we're all fucked.

No dog is inherently bad at birth. It's shit treatment that causes them to attack.

I think there should be harsher penalties for animal cruelty and dogfighting in particular.

I am also sad to say that for the safety of the public, pits (or really any dog) who has suffered that kind of abuse should be humanely euthanized. However, in cities with a pit bull ban or whatever, a perfectly well behaved, non-abused dog can be euthanized just for breed and I think that's BS.

Agreed on all counts.

This, SO HARD.

I don't believe in breed specific discrimination, which is what breed banning legislation is. BSL has been proven definitively to NOT WORK and on top of it is totally impractical.

UGH.

I don't like any big exuberant dogs. I don't really have anything against any particular breed. As long as your big dog won't jump up on me or bark at me, I'm cool with it. My SIL's roommate has a pit mix and he's a sweetie. I actually let him lick me once.

I'm not a fan of big dogs either. I've been bit more by my grandmother and aunt's old small dog than I've been bit by big dogs, but their spastic-ness and size combo really messes with me.

I have really sensitive skin (like, if you poke me, I'll bruise) and when a dog jumps up on me (especially my back) it hurts SO BAD. I went next door one day to borrow a few eggs from the neighbor and her dog jumped up on my back and sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid down it and I had 8 long scratches that turned to long bruises down my back. So whenever someone I know has a dog, I always ask them to put it up while I'm there if it's a jumper.

It's sad to me that you have to ask people to put their jumpers away. I ALWAYS put my dogs up when people come over because they're jumpers and it's just the polite thing to do.

I think the breed has an unfortunate reputation due to the stupidity of humans. When they are not trained well or are trained to fight, they are incredibly dangerous. My uncle was mauled by three pit bulls that had been trained to fight and got loose. I don't believe in breed bans, but I do wish there was some sort of way we could make sure they only go to responsible homes.

A breed in need of more love and understanding but that I admit I am more cautious around b/c of the wonky associations I have with them b/c of their dumbass owners/breeders.

I'm a little bit country and a little bit rock n roll that way, I guess.
