Like most other dogs, they're wonderful if properly trained and socialized. And yeah, thanks to their size and strength, a bite can do a lot of damage, but the same goes for dobermans, rottweilers, labs, golden retrievers, german shepherds, great danes, mastiffs, schnauzers, poodles, bulldogs, dachshunds, huskies...
The problem isn't the breed itself, it's that they're a fashion accessory and status marker for thuggish assholes who treat them like crap and encourage aggressive behaviour. Restricting or banning the breed won't take care of any problems; the thuggish assholes will just find a new breed to fixate on.
I agree with your last sentence, but I think that's also the reason why breed bans are ineffective. Those same jackasses just move on to different dogs.
I have never ever had problems with pit bulls. One barked at me once, but that is not a problem, we were all coming in the house with their owners and there was a lot of us new people. I understand. I however, have had numerous run ins with German Shepherds as a kid.
Now, do I think German Shepherds need to be banned? NO. Kids are stupid. Owners are stupid. There's nothing wrong with a whole breed of dog.
So: pitbulls, definitely need to be screened, but actually it's more their owners need to be screened. Like what's your reason to get a pitbull? Are you going to get a chain choker thing with the "teeth" on reverse and keep it on the animal's neck? Then no, you cannot ever have a pitbull. Or any dog, for that matter.
I have also met rotweillers and have had no problems with them either. I just listen to the owner and do as they say... but the one I remember the best was one who was so lazy! I don't think she would have done anything to anyone!
