What's better? Taking your dying pet to a vet to be put down where you will not be the last thing it sees or taking your dying pet to a place they love and shooting them in the back of the head so the last thing it remembers is being in a place they love with their owner ( Read more... )

I don't think there's a "good" way to kill an animal, but if I had to choose between my pet dying alone at the vet and dying secure with me I'd probably choose to take them out somewhere nice and do the deed.

The two dogs we've had to get euthanized, the vet let us be in the room with them until they died. If that wasn't an option I'd probably keep looking until I found a vet where that was allowed.

I wouldn't take my animal to a vet that wouldn't allow me to be with them during the euthanasia. When we had to put our cat down last year, I had the option to be with him when they did it. I opted not to, because I had both my kids with me and I was already a WRECK. I wish I had been able to, but my husband was out of town working and I had the kids....

Whichever one results in the least amount of trauma for the pet. If it's my cat and she's traumatized by even the shortest ride in the car, a bullet to the brain is more humane than taking her on a frightening ride.

If it's a dog who loves being in the car and doesn't fear the vet, then take that route.

Realistically, though, just have the vet come to your house and do the deed. That's what we planned but my kitty died on her own before the vet could come. Gently, in her own bed, with the comforting familiar noises of the household around her.

Oh wow...I didn't even think about having the vet come to you. I guess I just figured vets wouldn't make house calls for that unless it's a horse or something that obviously has to be a house call.

Call around and see if any vets in your area make house calls.

One thing to keep in mind is that they may become more defensive because the vet has come into their territory. We had a vet come to our house to put our cat to sleep and even though he was very sick and dying, he struggled and howled. Our idea of having our cat have final peaceful moments in his home was totally shattered and we were even more devestated. He had been going to the vet for months and even though he obviously didn't like it, he was always docile when the vet handled him in the office. It might not ways go that way (and i do know people with more postive experiences) but I doubt I would take that chance again.

A lot of vets will allow you to be there nowadays. Since I've never handled a gun and I just don't have that kind of ability, I'd choose the vet that would let me be in the room.

BUT I DON'T EVEN WANT TO THINK ABOUT THIS. OMG. Please let my pets stay healthy. If they have to go down, I would like to be there holding a paw.

Oh man I feel you on not wanting to think about it. Our three are close in age so I cry for hours if I start thinking about it. I'm currently trying to translate a dream I had recently lol...trying to keep from actually thinking about my babies.

I've never had a vet refuse to allow me to be present during the euthanasia. I prefer to be there with them, comforting them and saying goodbye as they pass.

I've had people make the argument for putting their own pet down by shooting it. I personally couldn't do it. No way could i shoot a creature i loved. Too violent. I could probably give the animal a shot to put them down if i had to, but i'd rather let that part be left to the professionals..i'd obviously have enough on my mind.

I agree with you. Plus, what if you miss or they turn around and see you holding the gun? My husband's argument to that (because he agrees with his cousin) was that he wouldn't miss. Guys and their logic.
