Breaking points

What is your breaking point on getting rid of a pet? Dog? Cat? Are they different? I don't mean moving or allergies, but I mean animal behaviors.

ETA: Our situation.... We got Ellie about a year ago. She game from a household with several dogs, all of which were given up at once. She showed anxiety problems, but no aggression, and we were advised that she may never be happy without another doggy friend. So we got Teddy, our puppy(who's now 10 months).
There were two separate, seemingly unrelated occasions where Ellie "lost it" and flipped out at another dog, one of which needed veterinary care. At that time, the owner of that dog also blamed her own dog, so we more or less dropped it.
All issues seem to be related to my husband, as Ellie is VERY attached and possessive about him. Recently Ellie has lashed out abruptly and harshly at Teddy, one time drawing blood. She also snapped at my 8 year old once, but corrected and wagged her tail upon realizing what she did. She does not seem aggressive to people, but I worry my kids will be caught in the crossfire, or that Teddy could be harmed. I also don't want Teddy's behavior to be negatively affected by her.
At this point, I don't feel comfortable having her around our kids, even supervised, so she's crated while I wait for calls back from rescues. I also don't know if I even consider her "rehomeable."
