If a couple gets a pet together, who should keep the pet if they break up? Should it be the person who makes more money? The person who really wanted the pet to start with? The person who has custody of the kids (if there were kids involved)? Should they share custody? Something else?

I personally have never seen a couple that got a pet where the pet didn't *really* belong to just one of them so that's who should. Otherwise, I don't really know. No pets before marriage? ;D

In my last relationship, that was true of only 3 of the 4 cats. The other loved us both pretty much the same, and was really mad when I left.

To the one the pet loves the most.

Gord and I talked about it at one point. Sasha loves him the best - she doesn't have much to do with me - so he'd get her. I'd get the other two because they follow me around wherever I go.

Yep. Our cats have pretty clear preferences, and while I'd miss two of our three cats dearly, they are "daddy's kids." (Ironically, the one who loves him the most is the cat that I brought into the relationship. But I "stole" the cat he brought into the relationship, so it's even.)

We've joked about this before, but given the pets' personalities and preferences, we know the dog & two of the cats would be miserable with him and the other cat would be miserable with me. So, he'd get the cat and I'd get the dog & other two cats.

Like someone else said, I've never seen a pet owned by a couple that didn't have a pretty clear preference on who it preferred.

Like others said -- you kind of go based on who the animal is most bonded with, combined of course with willingness to take care of pet, etc. In most cases everyone sort of knows, whether they've said it or not, I think.

Whoever wants them and/or whoever primarily takes care of them.
