I just finished reading this a few days ago, and I adored it. My review is under the cut.
Alright, so I just finished The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, and I absolutely loved it. The author displays his ability to write not only in how the story is remniscient of Hamlet but how Wroblewski sets up Edgar's journey with the dogs and how his inablilty to speak affects what he can do. The dogs do survive in the end, but like with Hamlet, everyone dies. Gar, Edgar's father, of course reappears as a ghost to warn not only Edgar but also his mother, Trudy, of his brother, Claude's, deception. Edgar runs away and learns that he can face his mother and uncle with this charge, eventually returning back to the Sawtelle farm. Only then does Trudy and Claude know that Edgar has survived his running away, and Claude eventually kills Edgar by leaving him trapped in a burning barn to die of carbon monoxide poisoning only to kill himself in his panic. Trudy, who tries to save Edgar's life once she realizes what Claude had done, falls and accidentally breaks her neck in the process. Only the dogs released from the kennel and a blinded Glen Papineau survive but only the dogs can go on to tell the tale as Glen does not understand what has occurred. Deep in meaning and detail, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is excellently written and touched my heart frequently.
