Hold down the power button until the light goes out - if that doesn't work, pull the battery, wait, and put it back in and start it up. It's not unheard of for sleep mode to hang on something.
If that doesn't get it, then there may be issues, but at present I can't think of any reason why a laptop under 4 years old wouldn't be viable. That said, the low-end white MacBook is about as cheap now as any Mac laptop has ever been, but it's still not cheaper than getting this one working...
I wish I'd thought to post this / email you BEFORE I took it to the repair shop in town yesterday. But it's now over there, waiting its turn in the queue. Could be four more days before they even look at it. Let's hope it's an easy fix!
An additional try, although they will probably fix it at the fixing place, but in case it happens again: Try unplugging it, pulling the battery, plugging it in without the battery, and starting it up.
I will take a wild guess and say the the CMOS battery has shuffled off the mortal voltage coil. When this happens, things get crossed up with batteries and adapters and charging and all that electronic stuff. I have seen similar behavior from a laptop of a certain age.
