My daughter invited me to watch her favorite movie with her tonight.  (She has a tv in her room, but it only plays dvd's and is hooked up to the Playstation 2 for her and her brother.)  So, I said sure, we'd make some popcorn and I got my pillows and we cuddled up on her bed to watch her favorite movie.  What is her favorite movie you may ask?  " ( Read more... )

I haven't watched the film, because I love the book so much I'm sort of afraid that I'll feel let down by the film. Is the movie set in the present day? The book is set in the late 60s/early 70s. I read it as a young teenager and I understood a lot of what the story was about, of course, but when I re-read it as an adult I realized, wow, this book is about a lot more than just the plot itself. It's about poverty (Jess' family) and gentrification (Leslie's family), and living in a time when everythign is changing and as a kid you've only got the sort of bare minimum of understanding as to how or why. the POV is all Jess and it's just outstanding writing, the way you can see through his eyes, but as a more knowing adult you're like oh, I see what you're trying to tell me there, things that Jess wouldn't be able to articulate, but seeing through his eyes I see them clearly enough ( ... )

I am going to get the book to read. I thought my daughter might enjoy it as well.

The movie is set in present day. It was filmed in New Zeeland and Terabithia was beautiful. It was a very well told story, although I would like to learn more about the relationship between Jess and his father as it seemed to be important, but something that wasn't totally fleshed out and left me wondering about in the movie.

It's so good to hear from you again. I hope all is well for you and yours. We are doing fairly well and enjoying spending as much time together as possible.

Note to Girl Child:

You are not allowed to be old enough to be comforting mom and saying "it's just a movie." You aren't. So quit it. And go back to being like... 4 again.

*sigh* Catherfina, we really need to get together sometime soon... I still see the Girl Child as the one I rocked to sleep when you all went to some movie I didn't feel like going to. I think she was 3? 2?

You know, she just turned nine going on 21. :)

We do need to get together. I've missed you. We'll have to find sometime when you have a break during the week and maybe we can arrange something. I am trying to make plans for visiting Chicago sometime this spring with the Kzoo Crew and the Girl Child. I promised her I'd take her to Chicago for her birthday when the weather got better and the Kzoo Crew have points they need to redeem for free stays in Hilton Hotels, so, maybe we can get together then. I do have to take her to the new American Girl store at some point. Her dolls hair really needs to be done...or so she says. ;)
