Movie Review: Lion King 3D

Sep 19, 2011 21:24

This journal has sat alone for a bit - so I'll give it a review for people to read.

Just saw the Lion King 3D today. Now let me take a moment to say that I have never seen a 3D movie before so I really have nothing to compare it to but...Here's my take on it

*If you want to be surprised - don't read this*

It's the same story and setting that we all grew up with; the
Jungle, Pride Rock, the Elephant Graveyard...That's what I was
expecting. It was quite cool to see the foreground (and some background)
elements 'pop' off the screen. When Simba is running through the jungle
after Rafiki - you really feel the power as you see the 3D scenery be
moved aside.

Other nice 3D points:

The Wildebeest Stampede - while there's no wildebeest jumping off the screen and
stampeding into the theater - the effect that is seen of the rising dust
and their running feet is quite impressive [going to take the moment
now to say there are a lot of various 'smoke' effects used]

Timon and Pumbaa's Oasis - those waterfalls really stand out in the background

Scenes with reflections in water - there's a few of these at various points. I must admit, the effect of the water bouncing up and the way the reflections look is quite impressive.

There are several others - but I'll let you find them on your own. Now with all reviews - there is the bad parts;

While the 3D DOES enhance some things - there are many points when it could have been used to great effect and wasn't (Key example; Mufasa's Spirit appearing to Simba = I expected to be able to see Mufasa's face pop off the screen and float in the air...No, while it did look good. It didn't pop like I expected)

Not only that - some of the effects can be distracting to the movie itself (example: the silent moment at the end of the film when Simba roars over the Pride. While the 3D rain does make it look good - it kind of subtracts [in my book] from the power of that moment when Simba makes his accent.)

All in all; If you are a Lion King fan and want to relive your childhood or share it with younger generations, I'd recommend going to see it. However, if you are wanting to see it only for the 3D effects...You might want to stay home and wait for it to come out on video in 3D [don't kid yourself, it will].
