Back from Ravencon in Richmond, VA. Had a good time. Went to Q Barbeque and had a bbq pork sandwich and hush puppies for a late lunch on Friday. Threw a party with wmslawhorn and makotohanabi Friday night, pretty much ran out of beer and cider, but not as much of the hard liquor, although the Jack Daniels, the spiced rum and the coconut rum were all completely consumed ( Read more... )

I like to wear my trilobite necklace with my trilobite t shirt. I didn't mean to become a one-woman trilobite education force when I bought the shirt, but I have. It seems like every time I wear it someone asks me what they are and I get to give a little lecture on paleobiology. All those biology courses did some good after all. Besides get me the best job of my life, assistant editor of BioScience magazine.

Just looked it up on Amazon. They corrected your typo and sent me to the right book! It looks fascinating and has a 4 1/2 star rating with 38 reviews. Sadly I don't have as much time to read in this lifetime as I want so I may not get to it. But if you like natural history books with personal anecdotes and some incredibly funny parts, check out Gerrold Durrell. Start with either "The Bafut Beagles," the story of his first animal collecting adventure and which paid for the next trip, or with "My Family and Other Animals," the story of his crazy British family living on Corfu while he was a little boy and starting to soak up natural history. I'd rate him above E. O. Wilson as a naturalist and I have an incredible amount of respect for Wilson.
