Ok,another update. I'm going to Biloxi/Gulfport, MS in a week. So excited. It's part of AmeriCorps H4H.. everyone goes to the Build-a-thon. And that means two Saturdays that we don't have to lead volunteers! Yay! Tonight I had a pretty awful time.. found out the concert I was set to go to tomorrow night (Relient K) is SOLD OUT. Definitely go with the honda/toyota. For the buck you'll pay on a semi-entry level (such as a Accord or Camry), those things will last a long time if you keep it properly maintained. Go a few years old...no more than 4-5 though if you can. The problem you'll get to at 4-5+ years and close to 100k miles, the timing belt needs replacing around 100k miles which will run you about $1,000 dollars. Talk to some ATL people for a trusted auto mechanic and bring any car there for an inspection to make sure you won't need any repairs.
My 94' Honda Accord's at around 150000+ miles (my odometer broke a long time ago) and still going strong.

I agree go with the Honda Civic. And for that price point you might have to go used.....which isn't as bad as you'd think. I bet your mom wants you to get a new car so you can get the warranty. Well CarMax happens to sell only the best used cars and you can get their warranty (which is better than my new car warranty I have now). Check out their website for more info and to search cars if you'd like. (And I know a lot of useless info on CarMax because my best friend works there.....so sorry if I'm biased. :P)

Good luck in the job and car search!

Good point about the warranty provided by CarMax. Plus, you don't have to deal with haggling from CarMax, so it's probably where I'll go when I get another car someday.
Also, with the price reduction received from buying a used car, it'd take some really bad luck to rack up enough repair bills exceeding the money saved by going used.
