I guess my first entry should be about cats!

Or pets in general that is.  Recently, I've noticed a disturbing trend (among family, colleagues and even a few friends) of an increasingly blase attitude toward pets.  People are giving up their pets to shelters -- where euthanasia is a probable certainty -- or even taking their pets to vets to be euthanized because they don't want to "traumatize ( Read more... )

Welcome to the navel gazing self-absorbed world of blogging! Right off the top of my head I can think of one other GG&SSer who you might be interested in flisting (that's "friends listing" or adding to your list of friends ... in case you were curious). A former GG&SS tech director who returned to Boston posts at carl_spackler

Frankly, I think your children will have much bigger issues than whether or not they are allergic to cats -- first and foremost, did they complete the "homework" their father gave them and memorize the biography of each Senator in Republic of Rome ("If you don't know ALL the members of the Mithras faction, kids, then no dessert for you!).

Child: Dad, can I go outside and play?

Me: Not until after you have finished your assigned viewing for the day.

Child: But, I've already seen four episodes of Star Trek today.

Me: Only four? Well then sit down. "For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky" isn't going to watch itself.

Wife (calling John Condray): John, do you have time to come over today to teach my child and husband how to play catch?

John: (much laughter). Well, of course I'd be happy to.

Husband: But I don't want to learn how to play catch!!!

Child: Yeah! Uncle John is coming over! Can Uncle Jeff come over too so we can play touch football?

Husband: You're all insane! We were supposed to watch Babylon 5 reruns tonight and then look at B5 figurines still in their original packaging -- I am not playing touch football, damn it!

Child: Dad, touch football is fun!

Husband: No. You're wrong. Babylon 5 is fun.

Oh, and I totally agree with you wrt the pet thing. You have a pet, you have a child. You don't just kill your child because you're tired of it.

I couldn't make the choice between going into a hurricane shelter and leaving Saffie or staying outside. (Okay, that's not true. I don't think I could go into the shelter and leave my baby.) I can't understand people who just throw their pets away. It's disgusting and immoral.
