I do something similar for story starts, but I kind of think of it like train tracks--what is the one thing that pulls the train off those tracks? I have one MC, S, whose life changes long before I start the story. But the train-jumping incident comes with another MC, V. V's incident is what causes the train to jump the tracks, the thing that allows S to live. As a happy coincidence, V's incident also makes for a nice story starter. :)
Unfortunately, I think I'm still waiting for my own life to have that track-humping moment.
