After a second viewing to verify what you said here, I'm really of the mind Sam wants to stick around because he wants to somehow undo what he's just done. Because the Sam Winchester I know? Is going to really want to redeem himself. The Sam Winchester I know has just taken on the motherload of all guilt-baggage (even if DEAN STARTED IT, lol - I can see the brothers fighting in the back seat...heee) But, yeah. If they writers know the Sam I know, he was sticking around to make sure things didn't get worse.
Hmmm... yes, hadn't thought of that, but it is indeed a possibility. Especially if they start next season at that exact same moment, which I really think they need to do. It would be a bit of a let-down if it starts sometime later and we don't see how the boys extracate themselves from what looks to be a very sticky situation!
The only problem is that if Sam used up all his mojo on Lilith, what the heck can he do to Lucifer? And when he said "He's coming" I almost thought I heard a hint of wonder, more than fear in his voice, and that is what's got me twitching. That and the fact the boys are there, right there, frozen like two wee rabbits caught in the headlights of an oncoming semi!
I've literally only just finished watching the finale and I'm still all flaily and OMFG-ing about the awesomeness of the clutching at the end.... so I'll have to get back to you on your question in the morning, once I've slept on it, lol.
Yeah, that clutching was fantastic and so instinctive! Shit's about to hit the fan in a big, big way so what do you do? Grab your brother, that's what!
Great episode though, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on my ponderings.
Any length of time for the hiatus is too long in my opinion. Blah.
I had that same question. Next season should be interesting. Will Sam be tempted by or drawn to all the supposed rewards from Lucifer for setting him free? What about the tie between Dean and Michael. What's up with that? And where is God? I can't wait to find out.
Yep, I'm loving all the juicy questions that they've left us with and I'm pretty damn confident they'll do a good job of answering them. They haven't let me down yet. I'm particularly curious where God is in all this, but despite the possible Lucifer draw for Sam, and the Michael/Dean connection, I am hoping that they're done with brother against brother. I really want them to be a formidable team again.
Either way though, loved the episode and can't wait for season 5!

I'm with you there. I think they've learned their lesson, and in no way do I want their problems to be miraculously mended, but think they'll at least rely on each other again. Tension and confusion and anger and guilt and angst are expected, with a large side of hope. Oh, boys.
Aw, you softie! Hee! I know. What can I say? The Winchester boys turn in me in to a soft little, marshmallowy, piglety creature. *g*
Lol! I think you're right about the fandom being pissed. I read on someone else's LJ that only in the SPN fandom would the fans consider an episode that ended with Lucifer about to bring forth the apocalypse as hopeful! All because the brothers were back together again.
LOL! So true. It was so obvious at TWoP that people were dancing with joy all because of the Sam/Dean *clutch* there at the end. Oh, and Ruby dying of course. (I think there were church bells in several cities because of that. ;) )
I admit, even as a loyal viewer, if not a fangirl of this particular show, I much prefer it that way. Sam. v. Dean was beginning to wear. This had better not be a temporary reprieve.

Seriously though, I'm glad the finale brought the boys back together because otherwise... Man! The fandom would have been pissed!
