Read today on Sky that BP have politely declined Cameron's offer, but the US department of Wildlife have not and have invited him to talks. Still holding out that he can help

I know; I felt so disturbed all evening after seeing those poor birds suffering so. That big, brown pelican they brought in that was just coated in oil and flapping around trying to breathe made me ill. And Anderson Cooper pointed out how the head of BP has spent $50 million on damage control advertising to try to make himself look more sympathetic, while his company STILL hasn't paid those fishermen the few thousand each he promised for their lost income and wages and what about using that money toward cleaning up those poor, dying animals? The more I see of that CEO, the more he disgusts me.
My personal favourite in terms of the BP CEO were his comments about 2 weeks in to the disaster and how this was all just a "modest" spill that will have a "modest" affect. Yeah, sure. As someone else pointed out in response - how would he like it if we came to his house and covered his home and garden in a "modest" coating of oil, and added a "modest" amount of oil to his food and water supply?
Spending that much on damage control just to save face?! It's too late for that, you jackass. I mean, I know accidents happen and this was a terrible one where people died, but if BP showed a little more contrition, and were open to help from any and all then at least I'd know that they felt bad about it. What scares me the most is if it all comes out that the severity of the disaster is because of previous shortcuts and shoddy maintenance. If that is the case then they need to be locked up and the key thrown away.
What gets me is this same thing happened in 1979, Rachel Maddow (sp?) did a spot on it and it was I believe the same company that is now known as BP today, as well; the thing is, in '79 they tried the EXACT SAME USELESS CRAP procedures they're trying now, 31 years later, with the same result--FAILURE. And like Rachel, I want to know, why haven't they concentrated in the past 3 decades on figuring out a way to FIX leaks and spills like this instead of just inventing technology to dig DEEPER and further out, making it even MORE difficult to ever staunch the flow of an out-of-control leak like this one? As my son said, there's no MONEY in finding solutions to fix their own mistakes, never mind that the outcome has been proven BEFORE, through GRIM EXPERIENCE, to be horrible to the environment, to wildlife, to peoples' jobs and income, etc. What do they care as long as they can rake in the money hand over fist? I think these oil companies are THE most corrupt, soul-sucking behemoths of avarice, greed, and callous indifference that I have
( ... )
Wow, I didn't know that about 1979. What is about us that we can never, ever learn from our mistakes? That is just horrendous that something similar has happened before and they still have no idea how to fix it! For a species that is supposedly so advanced we are monumentally stupid. No wait, I mean greedy. Yeah, that's it casue that's all it boils down to.
I've kind of reached the point now where I can't watch anymore. I mean, I do, but I'm trying not to. It's all making me feel so sick and helpless and I don't know what to do.
BP are behaving so badly it's despicable, and I am ashamed that some of these people are British. I mean, I know when it comes down to it, anyone who reaches the top levels of a huge corporation has a good dose of evil in them (seemingly this is an essential part of the job description), but still. Embarrassing and shameful.
My god, we're a horrible species.
I was saying just this to my mother last week, about this very topic. It sickens me how so much power seems to be in the hands of the very worst human beings, and I don't know what to do about it. Ugh.
Well luckily - in a way - our news these days is so consumed with preparations for the World Cup that hardly anything else features so at least I'm not bombarded with it. Online is a different story though.
It sickens me how so much power seems to be in the hands of the very worst human beings, and I don't know what to do about it. Exactly. It's like this weird law of human nature - anyone who isn't inherently evil/greedy/selfish doesn't try for power and yet those are the very people that should be in power. As usual we always have to get everything backwards.
