THIS. I need to print this out in big bold black letters and PASTE it to my wall:

I have to admit that I hate writing first drafts. I find them hard work and will have to force myself to sit down and write. I recently learned through NaNo that it helps if I don't pay too much attention to the nitty details and just get the overall idea down. It also helps to know that only after writing the shitty first draft (not my words, I'm quoting Anne Lamott here :-D) I get to edit. Since I enjoy editing and am also a sensible person, I write that first draft. Duh!

I love editing, SO MUCH! That is where the magic is! But I have GOT to turn off the editor and just write the awful horrid first draft. Okay. That's exactly what I will do from this moment forward, and lol what I have GOT to do if I am going to hit that 250k. Got To Do That.

Stuff the editor in a closet and keep him occupied with sorting pieces of chocolate according to size and calories. And percentage of cocoa.

Go write your shitty first draft.

Then open the close, eat the chocolate and let the editor loose.

You'll get a novel and you'll also get chocolate. :-)

This was really fun to read, doll. It's lovely to know I'm not the only one who hates first drafts. While the idea of the shitty first draft is helpful, I still have trouble making my inner editor STFU while I'm writing that first, god-awful excuse for a draft. While I write my next draft, I am going to bind my inner editor with ropes and lead chains, gag her viciously and shut her in a cupboard under the stairs with a large supply of truffles to sort (using only her nose). Then we'll see if she consents to do any actual editing when I decide to let her out again, or if she somehow eats all the chocolate while I'm bashing away at it--just to spite me. Bitch.

It was fun to write, too. I didn't realise I had to say so much on the subject.

Your ideas how to treat your inner editor are inspired, darlingest! Don't treat her too harshly though - you still need her. :-)
