I saw the film a second time on Sunday, and am queued up for a third time (good lord) this weekend. This is the result of accompanying friends who had not yet seen the movie.
I was surprised to find I enjoyed it more the second time because my inner critic shut up...for the most part. Still, the Megaloceros as a steed struck me as ludicrous, but mostly as bad CGI. Similarly, the less-than-adequate CGI of Azog and a lot of Goblin Town did me in, too.
Come on, where is my Glorfindel and Elladan/Elrohir?
Fans believe they have spotted them: there are (it appears) three helmless elf-riders (other than Elrond) who circle the Dwarves and Bilbo. One is blond. We'll get a better look when the DVD/Blu-Ray comes out and frames can be captured. I have seen a still of the blond dude. Er, not exactly the most impressive hair.
With a second viewing, I'm still firmly of the mind that Freeman, Armitage, and McKellan not only carry the film...they save it.
Azog I can deal with, every hero needs a villain to come up against in the finale. But the whole Goblin Town bit to me was a waste of time and just seemed like a whole time filler to stretch it out to 3 movies.

Well from all the fanon/canon I've seen, I can't imagine either the Twins or Glorfindel letting Elrond out of the valley especially to chase wargs/orcs without them being along to guard him. It will be interesting to see the screen caps of those riders.
