I've realized this for a long time. The main problem Christians seem to have with this is the fact that it is called a Marriage, since that has a certain definition beyond the civil rights which gay people want for themselves.

I think all legally defined unions under state law should be called "civil unions", whether they are gay or not. Straights can have their "special" recognition under whatever religious belief they have, and gays can have the legal rights they have been fighting for. I don't think it will solve all the issues, since each side is firmly entrenched and doesn't want to give ground. But, in my eyes, this is all semantics that they are arguing over.

Welcome to France. Seriously. In order to get married in the the land of the Franks, you must have a civil ceremony performed by a judge. If you want the religious trappings later, fine. But you aren't married, as far as the government is concerned, if you haven't stood up in a civil setting. Most couples do the civil ceremony at the courthouse in the morning and do whatever religious rite in the afternoon.

I think it works very well.
