Yes, this one definitely needs the present tense. Past would indicate that somebody survived to tell the tale.

XD That's kind of what I was thinking, but my brain was not being nice to me. XD Plus I wanted a sense of immediacy, of it happening right now. So you really have no idea how it turned out. :/
