Title: Sam's Place
Author: catw
Pairing: F/S
When Samwise was just a small child, barely able to walk on his own feet, Hamfast Gamgee took his boy to Mr. Bilbo's garden. When he sat him on the grass the little one stood up and walked on wobbly feet straight to the flower bed. With a beaming smile he greeted a scarlet peony and without further ado he pushed his little nose into the blossoms. A bee emerged, scrabbled over the freckled nose and before the startled adults could react, it flew away. Samwise, still smiling followed the little creature with his eyes and said “bee”. Hamfast Gamgee knew right away that Sam’s place always would be in the gardens.
Hamfast liked that thought.
When Bell Gamgee fell ill a few years later, Samwise was allowed to play in Mr. Bilbo’s garden during his father’s working hours. To the surprise of father and Squire, Sam didn’t play with his toys but observed Hamfast’s doings. Unasked small Samwise mimicked his father’s work at the adjacent vegetable bed. Soon he took over little tasks and to Samwise’s delight, Mr. Bilbo rewarded his work with stories. Hamfast Gamgee knew right away that Sam’s place would be in the Baggins Garden.
Hamfast liked that thought.
When Mr. Bilbo took in his young orphaned cousin, Samwise was given a new task. The shy lad from Buckland didn’t have a good start in Hobbiton - Lotho Sackville-Baggins and his crony Ted Sandyman made sure of that. Samwise followed the young master, and knowing the ways of the town’s bullies, he saved Frodo a few times from a fight. One day they stepped right into Lotho’s and Ted’s trap. This time they had a fight after which everything changed. The gardener and the young master were adored by the young boys and respected by the older lads. Frodo found new friends in Hobbiton but his best friend would always be Samwise Gamgee. Sam knew then that his place was at Frodo’s side - come what might. Hamfast suspected that Sam’s place would not always be Bag End’s garden, but the young master’s side
But still - Hamfast liked that thought (even though he hoped that the young master would not take after Mr. Bilbo and hare off to who-knows-where).
When Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee came back from the great quest, together they set to work restoring the Shire to its former state. After Bag End was restored as well, Frodo invited Sam Gamgee to move in with him and Hamfast Gamgee knew beyond doubt that Sam’s place would always be at the side and in the heart of Frodo Baggins.
He didn’t like that thought one bit, but he was wise enough to hold his tongue on the subject. After all, Samwise knew his place. He always had.
