So why are they so sad that the pope died.

Catholics do believe in heaven, but for them, they somehow feel super spiritually connected to the pope because he is the mega-head of their church. I would say it's similar to your personal father dying or a close family member dying - if you do believe in heaven, you are comforted by that, but you are still selfishly sad because a part of you life is now gone forever.

I was being facetious really but I think they are being really selfish, why else wouldn't they be happy he's "moved on", there will be another pope to worship soon enough.
