I belive the key to all this lies somewhere in adolescense where it generally sets in for girls. I've done a lot of reading, thinking, and paperwriting on the subject of our culture and how it affects young woman. Check out http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/view/

I checked out the link. I wasn't too surprised, but it was interesting. I think this frontline episode should be shown and discussed in more High Schools. I'd also like to see some of the papers that you've written on the subject. Kudos to you on the quote too =)
