(D) So what's with all the Russian Friends

OK, so both this journal and Kit's journal recently got friended by Russian-language journals. Is this the new method of operation of Russian Bride agencies? If so, it appears that being able to read their language is important, and we fail miserably. I guess they'll go away eventually.

They don't look like spam journals, but I guess time will

They're Russian bot accounts. Report them here:

The one that's been around longer is already suspended, I just reported the other one. They're making more of an effort to look like real people than they used to, including an icon and posting some matching pictures of the person concerned.

I got friended by one too. He/she/it took me off after a few days.

In the past month or so, kimsnasna, gocepym and limimets have friended me. They all looked vaguely Russian when I casually glanced at their user info pages, and now they're all suspended.

This Bruce Schneier blog entry suggests one possibility for what they might be up to. My guess is it's nothing so sophisticated, however: I bet they're just hoping you'll friend them so they can trawl more of your journal for identity-theft purposes.
