Dad's Wedding Cake.

It took me weeks of planning and figuring out scale, Two days of cutting out the rough outlines of the buildings and making flowers, and countless hours of line drawing and shading to bring the buildings to life. And I think it was all worth it. Dad and Kate both loved it.

What do you think?

The cake is Lemon with Lemon Curd on the top tier, The middle tier is Chocolate with Chocolate Ganache and the bottom tier is Vanilla with Chocolate Ganache. The entire cake is frosted with vanilla Italian Buttercream.

From Left to right, and top to bottom. The Smithsonian Castle, The U.S. Capitol Dome, The White House, The Jefferson Memorial, The Kennedy Center Opera House, The Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument. Some of the landmarks have dimension to them to give them more depth.

The imperfection in the corner of the lower tier (near the left side of the Lincoln Memorial building) was done by the staff at the hotel when they moved the cake. It was not like that when I dropped it off before the wedding. I was NOT happy. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get corners THAT straight and square?! Everyone said it was fine, and not to worry about it, that no one else would see it. BUT I SAW IT! I tried to fix it, but the frosting was too soft by then. I was not pleased.

In the distance you can see the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The view from the top of the hotel was beautiful.

On the Right side here you can see at the top, Kate's House (yes it is pink in real life too). St. Patrick's Church (were they were married). And at the bottom is Ford's Theater (were they had their first date).

On the Left you can see Dad's house (the one he grew up in). The Bistro d'OC (their favorite restaurant.) And the Key Bridge Marriott (were the wedding reception was held) and Key Bridge.

Here you can see Kate's House and Dad's House next to each other.

I made all of the cherry blossoms too.

The topper is a 3D cast model in white chocolate of the U.S. Capitol Dome. It is the only thing on the cake I didn't make myself.

All of the buildings represented either iconic Washington Landmarks or places that were significant to Dad and Kate as a couple. It brought Dad's Hobby of building a miniature village and all the places that they love to life.

Dad wants to keep all of the buildings and use them as Christmas ornaments. I don't think they will hold up to that. Some of them were damaged after they were removed from the cake. I might be able to fix them, but I think it would be better if I re-made them out of Polymer clay. We will see.

I'll have more of the rest of the wedding later. I've just been dying to show you the cake.
