I've found the contraception I want - it's effective, stops periods & PMS, reduces the risk of cancer, and won't be out for another 5-10 years. Oh, and they've only tested it on 200 people.

Doh.

It seems that this new pill (apart from being controversial) is also making Family Planners worry that people will think the current methods are unsafe, ( Read more... )

I can't find the article I was reading which explained that. Sorry. As I understand it, rather than adding more progesterone and oestrogen to your system, it blocks the effect of progesterone, stopping ovulation & making the womb less hospitable. It's got tiny amounts of the morning-after-pill drug mifepristone in it, which seems to reduce cancer in lab rats. More here.

And also - that is so shit. I wish there was some way to smite them with a fiery sword of empathy. :-/ I wonder what counts as a good reason? I think I'd be tempted to google it & then try to work the system to get what I needed. Or just hassle them. I don't know. Doctors always make me feel so helpless when they're contradicting what I'm telling them.

Dude, that sounds like the dream pill, although I still have worries about what it might do for people like me whose brain chemistry seems to be perminently out of whack anyway. I don't actually know a great deal about this, but it at least seems like I should be careful what chemicals I introduce into my system, if they'r ethe sorts that are likely to effect moods.

I don't know, but I imagine (optimism strikes again) it would be an improvement, as it blocks the effect of some of the hormones, rather than adding more. So logically, since the hormones make me moody and weepy, ant-hormones should make me happy and smiley. Yes. Because that's how bodies work: entirely logically. Indeed.
