Oh, I absolutely loved The Time Traveler's Wife! I really enjoyed story as such, but I also appreciated the actual writing a lot too.

I'm currently enjoying Thinks... by David Lodge, which is light-hearted campus novel about academics falling in and out of bed with each other. There's enough academic stuff to make it not seem like trivial fluff, but enough fluff to be fun.

Last short-ish novel I read in that kind of category was The Scheme for Full Employment. Could be worth a look if you enjoyed Nineteen Eighty-Four.
