Perhaps you can help. I'm finding it hard to find anything light/easy/quick but worth reading at the moment. In that category, I like: Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde, J.K. Oh, I absolutely loved The Time Traveler's Wife! I really enjoyed story as such, but I also appreciated the actual writing a lot too.

I'm currently enjoying Thinks... by David Lodge, which is light-hearted campus novel about academics falling in and out of bed with each other. There's enough academic stuff to make it not seem like trivial fluff, but enough fluff to be fun.

I rather like Gervaise Phinn's books, he's like James Herriot (if James Herriot was a school inspector and not a vet).

Last short-ish novel I read in that kind of category was The Scheme for Full Employment. Could be worth a look if you enjoyed Nineteen Eighty-Four.
