I miss Yorkwriters. I sharing my work (rarely though it was) with people I like of my own age. I miss hearing other people's work ( Read more... )

It's a nice idea, and something I'd like to be involved in if I had the time, but I can see a couple of problems ( ... )

That is a problem. I'd thought about it but hadn't decided what to do about it. Some conflicts of personalities are inevitable, but there's no reason why a few of us shouldn't have a not-at-all-tied-in-with-YW group if that works, or a big one for more people & take the risk. Usually if people left/didn't get on with people I would expect them to keep avoiding the unpleasant situations. But who knows? It's something to think about.

I was thinking about it partly because I find it hard to comment on writing on people's journals. Usually when I see it, I don't have time to do a read'n'think, and when I do, I can't find it easily so opt for doing something else.

Criticism...well, my idea was for people to be invited by people whose judgement I trust, on the basis that they would bring people with sound judgement and a certain amount of tact. I'd hope that the written format would allow for more detailed criticism.

I would be interested - I liked the Yorkwriters meetings I went too, and since being in Leeds i haven't managed to get to any meetings >.>

To be fair, it didn't seem to have been put up asking for criticism (at least the last bit, it seemed more like you were saying "hey, look at this work-in-progress") - even then I was writing some criticism but was at work so thought better of it.

As mentioned elsewhere, commenting on something like written work is not necessarily best done in the lj format because it's something you want to think about and return to, and by the time you want to return to it, it's disappeared from (certainly my) friends list.

Perhaps this is because people read their journal/flist in a way that's condusive to criticism of this type? (certainly I'm not in the right mental state for it most of the time I read my journal).

So either they have to know what's coming, or not use LJ. Just to toss an idea out there, it would be fairly simple to set up a messageboard using invisionfree or something for the purpose - and because that's a bit more persistant that could work better.

(So essentially, Kendrick shouldn't have deleted the YW messageboard)

I'd join such a community, but I usually put up my writing on my own LJ or else on the existing Yorkwriters community.

hey - I already set up such a community on LJ (yorkreadingroom). You are welcome to use it!!! I set it up with good intentions but never ended up using it. And now I can't get rid of it - unless someone else takes over as moderator.

So - let it be you !!! You'd be doing me a favour. Plus, I may well be interested in participating... I'd have to see. I've got so much going on in my head at the moment - and am trying to take a bit of a break from writing (& thinking about writing!) at the moment. But it might be nice to lurk - and chip in from time to time...!

Let me know, yeah?

That could be cool. The name's as good as any :) Now to see if the debate above falls in favour of LJ or not... I'll give it a few more hours, at least!

That would be really cool. I'd like to join, and would be interested in inviting Ros, if that's okay?

Ros is exactly the sort of stranger I had in mind, so yes, that would be awesome. I'll let you know when I kick start it, after people finish discussing how it should be. :)

Cool. I've decided to avoid entering the 'how it should be' discussions, as everybody seems to be making similar points to what I would, and I'm prepared to follow the group flow...
