Character Name: Mogget / Yrael, Eighth Bright Shiner
Character Series: The Old Kingdom Series, by Garth Nix
Character Age: Since the dawn of time, no actual dates known, immortal
Background: The series
Personality: Mogget is a complicated creature, to say the least. At first glance, he appears to be nothing more or less than a small white cat with unusually green eyes, but there’s a lot more under the surface. To properly describe what he is and why he is the way he is, it’s important to give a bit of background to the world in general. The series is set in a world that doesn’t ever get given a name, split into two countries that share a border - The Old Kingdom, where magic is the driving force behind everything; and Ancelstierre, a place much like England in the real world, where magic is believed a myth and nobody talks about the country Beyond the Wall.

There are two types of magic in the Old Kingdom. Charter Magic, which is unified and generally perceived as ‘good’ and Free Magic, which is extremely dangerous and generally only used by monsters or necromancers who are seeking to control the dead. The only exception to this rule is the Abhorsen, who is the reverse of a necromancer and who exists to combine Free and Charter magic to bind the dead into death again.

In the beginning of the world there were nine extremely powerful Free Magic elementals; Orannis the Destroyer, the Ninth Bright Shiner, tried to destroy the world. Seven of the other eight stood against him, and bound him, creating the Charter in order to protect the human life that would start to live in this world from then on. But the Eighth, Yrael, sat on the fence the entire time. When the fight was over, he was bound into servitude as punishment to the Abhorsen bloodline, and became Mogget.

Over the many generations that Mogget has been in service to the Abhorsens, he has grown extremely bitter and generally responds to most situations with sarcasm and a barbed wit. He seems to take a vicious sort of delight in the schadenfreude sort of humour, shown most obviously when he discovers the secrets of Touchstone’s past and holds it over his head by making cryptic comments to the other members of the party in order to make him squirm.

Scheming and manipulative, he is always looking for a way around any order he is given and any loophole that will allow him to be free again. It’s the bell on his collar which binds him into servitude, and only removing the collar can free him, so he spends quite a lot of time trying to convince the various characters to loosen it for him under a variety of excuses. On the few occasions he is unbound, he spends his time in a bloody and furious rage, attempting to murder the Abhorsen in revenge for so many years as a slave.

Despite this, his servitude does seem to have altered him for the better, although he’d deny it if ever confronted about it. In the final battle with Orannis (Book 3), he is unbound and told to choose wisely this time around. He chooses to fight with the Seven Charter spirits of his own volition, although the fact that Orannis asks him ‘why’ suggests that they may have been tentative allies in the past. His reasons for choosing to fight for the sake of good this time, however, are not as laudable as they could be. He states he’s only doing it because he likes living too much to let Orannis destroy the world, rather than because he cares about what happens to anyone or anything else.

He is an extraordinarily stubborn, and sometimes immature, creature, often standing his ground even if the result of doing so would be disastrous. For example, at one point Sabriel has ignored his previous advice and is being ambushed by armies of Dead Hands, he refuses to help until he’s being fed. Even as she’s fighting for her life, he complains about a lack of good fish and pretends to nap all because his opinions had been disregarded before. When he does finally help, because the nature of his binding means he can’t disobey a direct order from the Abhorsen, it’s with great reluctance and a lot of sarcastic commentary.

The final main factor of Mogget’s personality is a quirk that has undoubtedly come from being trapped in his cat form for centuries; he does sometimes forget himself and behave like an actual cat, enjoying being petted, a good fish, and the rather potent effects of catnip. If he’s caught out enjoying these things, he’s more than likely to take a swipe with his claws in retaliation and stalk off for a nap.

Abilities: Yrael is a free-magic creature that chooses to take the shape of a cat to Sabriel's eyes; however, it is revealed in the book that he appears as different things to different people. His other most common shape is an Albino dwarf with sharp teeth.

When unbound, he appears as a column of fire and is capable of massive damage, appears invulnerable to harm and is extremely sadistic.

Even bound he has a few powers. He seems to be able to appear from nowhere to be where he's needed, his claws can elongate and he ALWAYS lands on his feet.

His full abilities aren't really known, except that he is one of the Nine most powerful free magic creatures, so spells for almost any task come easily to him as part of his nature.

Sample Entry: [The sound of a bell echoed over the telephone, strangely dissonant as though its sound was meant for someone else, a toll of warning as a small white cat took up a perch on one of the chairs in his household and stretched luxuriously.]

Is it too much to ask for, for something interesting to happen around here?

[Not that he was really complaining. The absence of the Abhorsen could make any boredom worthwhile, the lack of that pull of servitude that made his soul thrill with a dark hope for possible freedom.]

Or at least a nicely cooked fish. Even a saucer of milk would be something.
