"Yara-kun..." Takizawa said, "what do you think?" He tapped a photo on the wall. Two boys, both grinning. One sun-bleached blonde, the other a tousled brunette.
Yara posted his hands on his hips. "A bit old, aren't they?"
Takizawa tsk'd. "Senseless. They're top of their year so far."
Yara found that hard to believe, looking at the goofy expressions. "Really."
"Don't you know them?" Takizawa said. "Yamashita Tomohisa and Akanishi Jin. Toma used to be pretty close to Pi." He gestured vaguely. "Before."
"Ah," Yara said, and crossed his arms. "Before."
Takizawa nodded, gazing down memory lane with a smile. "They were such sweet, young things. What happened."
Yara snorted. "Rhetorical, much?"
"Mm," Takizawa said, noncommittal. "They're so pretty though." He reached up and tapped the photo again, drawing Yara's eye properly. And now that Yara thought about it, he had seen senseless around. If he remembered right, Toma also talked about Yamashita on occasion. (Between drinks, maybe. But Yara held alcohol like a sieve and didn't often remember much.)
They were strangely similar-looking, for all their disparate features. Akanishi's ears were long-haired and fluffy, large to go with his hair, while Pi's were silky smooth, straight and dark. "They had matching piercings, you know," Takizawa smiled fondly.
"That's nice," Yara said, deadpan. "No, really."
"Come see them fight," Takizawa grinned.
Yara snerked. "What's in it for me?"
"Yaracchi, Yaracchi. If you have to ask that again after so much as their opening line, I'll eat my ears."
"You don't have any apart from the ones in your precious collection," Yara pointed out.
"All the more reason you should trust me, don't you think?"
Thirty seconds into the battle saw Yara meet with epiphany. "Ohh," he said, catty eyes wide. "They're the pair the kids all call brainless."
"Yes, indeed," Takizawa smiled indulgently. "And just between you and me, the staff do it, too."
"Little wonder," Yara said. "Far be it from me to agree with you, Tackey, but your ear collection's safe for now." Settling back in his chair on the sidelines, he turned his full attention on the match with an unholy mix of awe and appreciative anticipation.
"I told you so," Takizawa said proudly. "They're very good."
But Yara was too amused to hear him. "Next time, I'm bringing Yone."
"This is your birthday present, by the way," Yara said, shoving a bucket of popcorn onto Yonehana's lap.
Yone looked at the pair on the side of the arena closest to them. Tall and good looking, maybe a few years younger. "I already have a girlfriend, Yaracchi," Yone said patiently. "That's more your sort of thing."
"I hate you," Yara said conversationally.
"Aren't they a little old for you anyway?"
"Shut up," Yara grumped and threw a handful of popcorn at Yone's grinning face.
"At least they're almost legal," Yone said faux sympathetically, not even bothering to try hiding his amusement.
"I'll kill you." Yara glowered but his expression lost hands down when Yone, always up for a challenge, grinned wider and opened his eyes hugely.
"Not if I get you first," Yone hummed and the students in the seats around them scooted away as far as possible.
Giving the battle up as irrefutably lost, Yara turned towards the arena instead. "They're starting," he pointed out, only the slightest bit huffy. Yone smirked and obligingly turned his attention - and face - towards the match instead.
The other team was probably more to Yara's liking, young enough to still be awkward, old enough that the potential could be seen. The Fighter was all limbs and his Sacrifice huge-eyed with worry but steady. "Battle systems engage. We are priceless," they chorused, clasping hands tight. "An unknown quality."
("Priceless?" Yone repeated at Yara, delighted.
"Shh," Yara hissed, then added - resigned, "Wait for it.")
"Accepted." The blond stepped up with a huge smile back at his Sacrifice. "We're senseless-"
(Yone started laughing.)
"-but you can call us Pin!" He reached out and tapped the other's fist, then up, down, drawing back with his fingers wiggling and the complex handshake that wouldn't stop continued for minutes, ending with identical thumbs up signs and winks at their opponents. "Yey."
(Yara, casually pressing his discarded jacket to Yone's face in effort to smother him to death, knew the entire war was lost. Yone clawed it away and laughed even harder.)
"That was so cool!" The lanky Fighter gaped, and turned excitedly to his sacrifice. "Ne, ne Shoon, wasn't that cool? Let's make one up too--"
"Um, sure," Shoon said dubiously. "Taiyou. But battle first, handshake later."
("Shoon and Taiyou," Yonehana grinned, appreciative. "And Pin is...?"
"Yamashita Pi and Jin," Yara explained with a graceless patience. "Jin's the dumb one."
"The dumb one," Yonehana cackled. "So specific."
Yara rolled his eyes. "Fine, he's the one that's casting offence now, okay?")
Down in the arena, senseless' Fighter pointed at the priceless pair. YOU. Go krub get drunk! A cumbersome black light launched itself from their end of the arena.
"What?" Taiyou flailed at Shoon. "What did he say!"
"Um, go club, get drunk--" Shoon translated quickly. Not that the attack was coming on terribly fast, but it was still an attack and, "defend us, Taiyou!"
Nooo! Taiyou shouted back at Jin, arms flailing a warding X above his head. We can't! We're underage!
White light tagged the black, sitting on it. The black flattened and combusted.
"Whoa..." Shoon said, dumbly surprised as Taiyou threw a grin back his way.
Jin scowled. "I said Get drunk you stupid shit!" And this time, chains skirted the black light attack.
"You tell them, Jin!" Pi cheered. "Flood!"
Flood!
"It's the same thing!" Shoon said desperately. "Deflect again!"
"It's not the same!" Taiyou flailed, and coughed as the dark roiled in around them. Shoon held his breath, trying not to gag as the air thickened around him.
("Beer bombardment," Yonehana observed with a smile. "I like that."
Yara snorted. "It'd only work on minors."
"And Yaraemon who can't hold their alcohol," Yonehana grinned.)
"SHOON!" Taiyou shouted, MISTER DUCK, PLEASE HELP! DON'T DROWN!
Falling through the black, shining little yellow rubber duckies tangled in the chains, but senseless' heavy shackles clapped around Shoon's wrists all the same and he staggered trying to keep his feet.
"Shoon, don't die!" Taiyou said, slipping under his Sacrifice's arm to help. He couldn't straighten up, though, too tall.
"C'mon, Taiyou," Shoon slurred, giggling and more than tipsy. "Attack, yo!"
Taiyou turned his big woobly eyes on senseless as another rubber duck popped out of the air above, bouncing off of Yamashita Pi's head.
"Oh," Pi said absently, picking the yellow squishy up. "Gravity sure is strong today, isn't it?"
Yeah, Jin said. Pretty strong, huh.
Shoon crumpled, and priceless hit the floor.
"Huh?" Jin said.
"Yey," Pi said, with another thumbs up. "Win."
( Up in the stands, several rows in front of the maniac that kept laughing, Kame pressed a hand to his eyes to try stave off an oncoming migraine. His left ear twitched to the beat of a silent string of mental expletives.
"We don't know them," he said, pained.
Koki grinned and waved his Jin-made Pin uchiwa. "They totally make us look better. Come on, let's go say hi." )
"So," Yone hiccuped, trying to catch his breath. "Pi's the smart one, right?"
Yara looked pained. "Relatively."
"They uh, work well together," Yone snorted. "No one saw that gravity attack coming, including the Fighter."
"Don't turn," Yara said dryly. "That would be entirely too weird."
"Don't worry, Yaracchi," Yone grinned. "The juniors are all yours."
"Thanks." There was a pause as they watched priceless be carried out of the arena, and senseless excitedly flail about at the sidelines, talking to friends.
"Toma used to work with him, you know," Yara said casually, staring at the empty arena. "Pi, I mean. He talks about him sometimes."
Yone quietly turned to look at him. "Well. He is taller and better looking," he said after a moment and punched Yara in the arm.
"I hate you," Yara scowled but the tension melted from his shoulders.
"Come on," Yone said, tossing his remaining popcorn at a few stragglers lower down on the stands. He gave them his best smile when they turned around and smirked when they immediately looked away again. "I think Maachin's holding Koichi-san hostage."
"We're going on a rescue mission?"
"No. We're going to point and laugh."
omake:
"Koichi-saaan," Machida said sadly, lagging behind. "Where are we going?"
Nagase grinned and pulled Koichi in a little closer by the arm around his shoulders. "You mean Koichi and I?"
Machida's eyes sparked mutinously but he looked down, demure. "Right, Koichi and I."
Nagase smiled triumphantly- then frowned. "Wait a-"
Koichi shrugged him off and turned to smile at Machida, a glint in his eye suggesting that if he still had his ears, they'd be twitching. "We're going hunting."
Machida and Nagase exchanged disconcerted looks, torn between disturbed and turned on.
(Tsuyoshi had been sent to hunt down new students first but they'd discovered the first time that hunting was perhaps too fitting a term for it when the new students had come back quiet and obedient and very much cowed.
"You wanted them brought back," Tsuyoshi had said, quietly satisfied.
Mary had agreed and called it a success but Johnny, despite Tsuyoshi being his favourite amongst favourites - something that no one wanted to think about - had called for perhaps a bit more subtlety and for lack of anyone else with enough experience, time and ability to sense bonds, Tsuyoshi had been subbed by his Sacrifice.
No one had trusted Koichi on his own.)
"Magic school?" Ueda tucked his hair ineffectively behind his ears and crossed his arms over his chest, hunching in.
"Seven Moons Academy," Koichi said sincerely.
"Magic school," Nagase confirmed, hanging over Koichi's shoulder. Machida stared longingly at them from half a metre back, a little to the left.
"And you do...?"
"Magic?"
Ueda looked at them very carefully, Koichi with his fey smile and Machida's faraway gaze.
"Count me in."
