I have been mulling over this since you posted it.
What kind of disasters did you have in mind?
I mean, this is Minnesota. Of the natural disaster variety we only have available (currently) Flood, Fire, Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, Heat, Extreme Cold, Ton O Snow.
For a Flood to cause any problems where you live, well, the entire city would have to be under water. Does your imagined kit contain scuba gear?
Fires generally are not the kind of "Chicago Fire" variety, and in the happenstance of a local fire, ei, your house... said kit would go up in flames.
Tornado: House gone. Kit gone.
Severe Thunderstorms: C'mon.
Severe cold/heat: This is a possibility. What do you pack? A generator?
Ton O Snow: Well, we would have to get more than 10 feet in a 24 hour period, or 5 feet or more for several consecutive days for it to be a disaster. Pretty unlikely.
Then there are the MAN MADE disasters: Zombies, bioterror, dirty or clean nuclear attack, michelle bachmann, rosie o'donnel.
I hadn't really been worrying about a flood. (You are right, if a flood is reaching my house it's time to start building an ark.)
Tornado, well, the kit would be in the basement (as would we) so I should have access to the stuff.
Ice storm, blizzard. Both of those are possible. Those have, actually, been what I have been putting the most thought into. I don't have a generator, (God knows I want one) but I think I might be able to run my boiler on 2 car batteries. (It is hooked up to a small transformer and the pump and the boiler both list as being 24v.) I intend to experiment when I can

How the hell do you prepare for that?
