it is an anechoic chamber used to create a free field, or a space in which sound waves can propogate without obstruction or reflection in all directions. the fiberglass wedges absorb sound. they have to be on all surfaces, floor included, so there is a grating above the floor panels to stand on and put speakers/microphones/equipment on for testing.
