At the end of 'Forests of the Dead' she seems startled/resigned to find herself in a virtual world rather than being restored to full, proper life - doesn't she say something like 'You just couldn't do it, could you?'. If Donna's experience was anything to go by, I thought that life in that 'universe' could be sterile, and I could see River hating or resenting that, because in some sense she'd been prepared for either death or returning to real life. You could even go further and say that it was selfish - if completely understandable - action on the part of the Doctor. Rather like keeping someone plugged into a life support machine when there's absolutely no hope for them.

Do you think they'll keep River going until Twelve? I'd love it if they did, but I have a horrid suspicion that the character will be wound up this season, if Moffat's hints about Revealing All are anything to go by.

I have to confess I would be less interested in young!River, mainly because I adore how AK plays her. I was never a huge fan of Alex Kingston before this. I only liked her in ER (Brit in an American series, rooting for fellow Brit-type thing), but LOVED her more recently in 'Lost in Austen' where she made me completely re-evaluate my opinions of Mrs Bennet. Note to self: get hold of that, pronto.

Thank you! That's a relief - she's a rather slippery character to write, I think.

‘You do seem be making rather a mess of it,’ River says disapprovingly, noting after closer inspection that the nose and jaw don’t quite match the rest of the face. In fact, there’s something rather familiar about that nose and jaw…

I do like the idea of River recognising features of the Doctor as he regenerates and thinking 'ah, that's who comes next'.

The idea amused me, but given what we see in canon it's also completely so not what happens. Then again, I did rather think that this interlude occurs during a phase in the regeneration process when he's almost out of time, if you like. But I didn't say that, so it probably doesn't count!
