When shooting portraits, do you sometimes ask people to look off to your side? (as with Ilse & Stoffel) Or do they just do it?

No, I never give my subjects any directions, except when they are extremely shy of the camera. Then I´ll say something like 'Come on, make love to the camera / show me some love' or something along those lines.
