Prologue
Unexpected Letters
In the darkness of the night, a ministry owl weaves through sleeping dragons and misty clouds. Coming to a dark shape of a tent; the owl lands on the ground. It slowly made its way through the tent’s dusty flap and across several rolls of blanket and rug. Reaching the sleeping occupant, the tawny owl reached out with its beak and plucked out a piece of bright red hair.
“Yeouch!” Charlie Weasley cried out, sitting straight up clutching the sore spot on his scalp. Looking down at where he had been laying, he glared at the small owl that was holding a strand of his hair in its beak. “Why you evil little...” Charlie mumbled as the now annoying little creator lifted its right leg, offering the attached letter. Being wary of the vicious little beast, the red head untied the note. Looking at the letter’s envelope, he saw that it was from the Department of Enchanted and Magical Wildlife of America, sent via urgent owl. ‘Well that explains the rude awakening.” Without looking, Charlie dug through a small bag at the side of his makeshift bed, and pulled out a piece of glazed lemon bread for the owl.
Opening the letter, he quickly skimmed through it. Not comprehending what was written, he read through it more intensely. He couldn’t believe what was written! The American government had found a specimen of a supposedly extinct race of dragons in the Rocky Mountains. They also wanted to send it to the protected grounds of Hogwarts’ Forbidden Forest. The most exciting part in the letter was that Albus Dumbledore had recommended him, Charlie Weasley, to be caretaker of this particular dragon while it was on Hogwarts’ grounds. There wasn’t much information about the dragon, just that he should be at Hogwarts in a week to receive the dragon.
Writing down a quick reply of acceptance, he sent the owl on its way, once again flying through misty clouds and dragons. Charlie, though, went to sleep dreaming of the new adventure that lay before him.
