Doctor Who and.... Doctor Who

Oct 01, 2012 20:48

I haven't had much to say about recent episodes of DW - partly because I'm knackered and partly because I've been trying to take them at face value rather than try to work out any of the intricacies of the plot or find very much beneath the surface. That's worked for me, but I just had to say something about the departure of the Ponds.

Departures... )

I'm in complete agreement with you over last weekend's episode. I don't dislike Amy, but I'm not particularly fond of her, either. I'm apathetic enough that her departure didn't do much for me other than make me shrug.

I've had my DW listening on hold for the past several weeks while I do school work and I'm hoping to start up again soon. I'll definitely keep Gods and Monsters in mind!

I thought the departure was well done and well played by both - and at last, to see Amy really acknowledging what Rory means to her, was quite satisfying. But it was definitely Moff's version of "sad" - in that it was actually happy. Unlike RTD, who did "sad" to the extent it ripped us to bits.
I loved the exchange when Rory was about to jump -

"Do you expect to come back?"

"When don't I?"

This Seventh Doctor trilogy has been amazing. I do think you need to listen to the other two as well, though. Protect and Survive is brilliant (I think I reviewed it a few weeks back), and that's followed by Black and White which leads into G&M. I can't recommend them highly enough.

DON'T PANIC! She's fine although incredibly pissed off ;-) Have you heard any of Seven & Ace's audios? There are some incredible stories among them.

This review says how I feel about the episode, and about Amy and Rory, much better than I can.

The bit where she compares Ten's reaction to losing companions vs. Eleven's totally made my day. Basically, she points out that Ten was mature about it and put other people's needs ahead of his own (:-P to all those people who call him whiny, needy, emo, etc) while Eleven thinks only of himself (*trying to talk Amy out of* letting the angel zap her so she could be with Rory).

Such a relief to not be alone in my feelings about Eleven, Moffat, and the way Moffat writes companions.

That was one of the few things I read last night when scrolling through my flist - there are always so many posts after a DW airs that I end up just reading the first few!

But yes, I thought that comparison was excellent. While watching the episode, I was thinking that Eleven was being blindly selfish about Amy wanting to be with the man she loved; and I liked that it was River who was encouraging her and giving her hope. There were a lot of things that River said in the episode that made me think "huh?" (that whole bit about the Doctor's not liking to see people age, for instance), but that moment, when she told Amy to ignore the Doctor and go to Rory was perfect.

As I've said upthread, this was a very SM version of "sad", wasn't it? I mean, really sad would have been Rory being zapped and Amy unable to get to him, wouldn't it? Or Rory dying for real (for once ( ... )
