what's with the armadillos?

What's with the armadillos in the original Dracula?  I don't get it.  Since when have there been armadillos in Transylvania?  Weird as hell.  I mean, the whole movie was pretty cheesy (although I still liked it), but has anyone ever noticed that?  Also, there was no soundtrack, so now I'm listening to Bauhaus.  Hurrah Bauhaus!

I think that there is a conspiracy to put random animals in movies where they clearly do not belong. Like that bird in The Wizard of Oz that made a bunch of people think that they are seeing a munchkin hang himself.
