Slaughterhouse five is up there for me.

Two Steinbeck stories man. And my sister hates the old man and the sea

Hemmingway and Steinbeck were both reporters before they took up fiction. That's why they both have a concise but powerful style. The shortness of The Old Man and the Sea bothers some people because they're used to incredibly wordy writing.
