Supposedly this (Graham & Montrose) is the bad part of town or something, or at least not a good one - honestly, I can't really tell the difference by feel between this and the other sections of Brooklyn I've been in, but it definitely feels ( Read more... )

THE CLOISTERS. it's all the way up on 190th but ft tryon park is beautiful and then you get to spend time with medieval architecture.

also of note: all city museums (the met, the science museum, the cloisters, i think there are a few more) are suggested donation. pay what you can.

http://www.laboratoriodelgelato.com/ is a very tiny little gelato shop that mainly supplies restaurants, but has enough room for two people to squeeze inside and taste their wares. Up the street is a place that sells pickles from barrels on the sidewalk.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/empanada-mama-new-york has really tasty empanadas, 50 billion to choose from, doesn't take cards but trusted me enough to leave, get cash, and come back. (amazing)

Take the time to talk to strangers, they're pretty friendly. I learned how to walk cats on a leash from a guy who was doing so in Central Park, and everytime I got lost I just had to rustle a subway map and three people would zoom in and direct me. Mainly I just wandered around the city when I was there, but you can browse through my blogs on it: http://fieria.livejournal.com/tag/ny
