Got the grant money!!  *do do dooo!*  They are in the mail!  *do do dooo!* They should be here soon! *do do doooo!* Get to play with them for the next two years.

I am totally biology nerding out about the ordering of my new babies (they are actually babies, not me getting emotionally invested in them!). I've spent this evening fleshing out exactly ( Read more... )

How cool! One of these days I'll manage to nerve myself up to holding a tarantula. I still get a bit wigged out at the "too-many-legs" instinct, but they're fuzzy! Fuzzy puts things toward the Cute end of the spectrum (unless we're talking fridge contents, lol!)

Congrats on getting the grant money! :D

Thanks! And yes, people are a lot less freaked out by tarantulas than other spiders, myself included. One of my co-workers has a big grown up that we just let wander around the lab like a dog. Hes friendly and will come sit on your lap for warmth. Its funny to watch. However, I still don't like it when one of A. aperta gets loose and runs up my arm. I think its the 'small and so fast I cant see it' that bothers me. Its hard to fight the instinct to brush it off.

Oh, I hear you on that one! We had a close encounter with an extremely large "so fast I can't see it" spider when we first moved into an apartment years ago. It was a neighbor's "pet" (that he wasn't supposed to have, grr) that had decided to wander. Our best guess is that it was a Huntsman spider. All I know is it was as big as my hand and moved way too fast for anyone's comfort - not my idea of a good welcoming party! *shudder*

Oooh! Pretty purple bug!

Does hadrurus arizonensis have a cricket in each "hand?" *giggles*

Personally, I prefer praying mantises(what is the plural of that, anyway?). I found one on my room-mate's car yesterday, and happily transferred it to the garden. It was the most unusual color - almost white!

Oh man, praying mantises creep me out to no end. They're mean! Haha, and yea, the best way to handle the scorpions is to feed them in excess and THEN grab them. Too greedy to drop their catch and try to sting you.

Congrats on the money! Applying for a grant ourselves; hopefully your luck will rub off a bit! ;-)

OMG!! Scorpians and Spiders?! *envy!!* I didn't know what you studied and expected some sort of thorough data-like speech here, not super cool photos!! WOW!! I've often thought of owning such things...not that I need to be more peculiar but I do like 'em.

They are so much fun! So interesting! With the greenbottle blue's I'm going to run an enrichment test on them as juveniles, but their main purpose will be a courtship behavior study on the adults. They are notoriously hard to breed in captivity, so I'm going to see exactly what factors set them off and how females select their mates. This will result in a whole bunch of babies..too many for me to fit in this lab. I have a buy back contract with my wholesaler, but I know a few people have asked if they can keep one as a pet (including my boss!). If you'd like one, I can air mail it to you! I know they ship well, some of mine came to me from Oregon. It wouldn't be for a year to 18 months, but keep it in mind!

That is such an awesome offer! I'd have to think about it since I have a hard time taking care of myself and would have to look into scorpions as pets, but you've got me thinkin'!

Please do keep us updated as you can! This is so interesting!

The greenbottle blue's are actually the big blue tarantulas, second picture down. They are a lot of fun! They aren't the standard goofy ones that people usually get. These are kind of 'elite' tarantulas. They are really hardy though and need less care than some of the others ( one of the reasons I chose them). They also spend more time wandering and less hiding, and form really elaborate web platforms for themselves. Feed them crikets and clean out their container once a week and they are happy to be ornaments! Perfect for my lab set up.
