I'm still waiting to hear about the lionel richie part... however from what I've seen this is all true. In Afghan Bazaars there are more music video discs than movies. some of the videos are from more liberal middle eastern countries like Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan. Some are from Iran and the rest are Indian. I myself have a DVD somewhere called "Perssia vs. Arabi" and it has a few of Ruby's music videos on them and if you played them muted on MTV it would fit right in. Arabs also place great importance on appearance and spend large portions of their income on nice cars, nice clothes, and gold jewelry. So hip-hop's appetite for luxury goods fits in perfectly over here.

another thing is many Arab-Americans i've met love mexican food. The arab diet consist of lots of beans and rice dishes, grilled meats, and they love cumin and chili peppers.

so far the answer i've had from Arabs (1 Iraqi, 1 egyptian, and 1 jordanian) has been a no for Lionel Richie. But they said that they loved Barry White though. Ironically the Jordanian guy actually knew Lionel Richie, they used to go to the same doctor in LA, apparently Lionel Richie actually asked him the same question "Do people in the middle east like my music?" because he had recently had a tour go through the middle east. He also met Ella Fitzgerald at this doctor who apprently was very big in the middle east in the 60's after she played a big show in Baalbek.

Despite the blow to Lionel Richie's apparent fame in this article, (and who knows we didnt ask any old iraqi men like the article mentions) all of them did say yes, Hip-Hop is having a huge influence on arab pop culture. Don't believe me? Our female Iraqi translator sings 50 Cent's "P I M P" song...

I usually win civilization by out-culturing everyone. Evidently that's the way to go in real life as well.
