I posted this as a comment in the talk_politics forum, responding to this post on the trend of teenagers "hooking up," but I thought I'd also put it here to see if it engenders a good discussion ( Read more... )

I don't have any particular belief that sex belongs only in marriage, but I do have some pretty high standards for who I let touch my cervix. I've passed that along to my children with two or three "rules", the primary of which is ( ... )

These are AWESOME rules. Thanks for the example from Joan of Arcadia, too. I shared it with my son tonight at dinner, and we had a great discussion.

He opined that guys primarily want to lose their virginity for "bragging rights," and that they didn't think the girl would be hurt by casual sex because, "Hey, she got to have sex with *me*!" This was all tongue in cheek, of course.

That boy kills me. :-)

My kids were talked to about sex their whole lives. It's not a "dirty act", it's a powerful act. We don't talk about specifics of our sex life, but we certainly put it in context in a general sense. My kids definitely know my opinion on where sex belongs in a relationship, and as far as I can tell my 17 and 19 year olds are handling sexuality just fine.

Very true about being potentially tied to the person forever.

My grandmother had a theory that a girl will be in love with the first person she has sex with until her dying day. I don't believe that, but I do believe there's something spiritual about the sexual act that binds us in a way we don't understand. I simply don't believe it can be casual, no matter that people try to make it so.
